The HI96735 portable photometer is for the measurement of total hardness. Hanna's portable photometers feature an advanced optical system; the combination of a light emitting diode (LED), narrow band interference filter, and silicon photodetector ensures accurate photometric readings every time. Hanna's exclusive CAL Check ™ feature uses NIST-traceable standards to verify both validation and meter calibration. The unique cuvette locking system ensures that the cuvette is inserted into the measurement cell in the same position each time to maintain a uniform path length.Total hardness refers to the presence of magnesium and calcium. The hardness of magnesium and calcium is mainly due to the current of the water that dissolves these salts as it flows or filters through different layers of strata. Hardness can also cause limescale build-up in pipes in cooling and heating systems.The HI96735 portable photometer uses an adaptation of the EPA recommended method 130.1 to measure total hardness concentrations ranging from 0 to 750 mg / L (ppm) as CaCO3. When the reagent is added to samples containing magnesium and calcium, the sample turns purplish-red; the higher the concentration, the more intense the color. The associated color change is analyzed colorimetrically according to the Beer-Lambert Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color, and the radiation emitted depends on the concentration. For the total hardness determination, a narrow band interference filter at 466 nm (blue) allows the silicon photodetector to detect only blue light and bypasses all other visible light emitted by the LED. HI96735-11 CAL Check ™ standards are used for calibration and performance verification of photometers with the CAL Check function KEY FEATURES - CAL Check ™ - Enables performance verification and meter calibration using a secondary standard traceable to NIST. - GLP: Records the date of the last user calibration performed. - Built-in timer: ensures that the proper reaction time is used for the chemical reaction.
