The professional blog, in particular Hemmera, leader in air conditioning and industrial cooling solutions, discusses the recent adoption of the revision of the regulation on fluorinated gases by the European Union, known as F-Gas III, this Regulatory change does not only redefine the framework for action. for manufacturers, distributors and end users in the industry, but also establishes new environmental targets aligned with global climate goals.
Introduction to the F-Gas III Regulation
Since its creation, Regulation (EU) No. 517/2014 has constituted a fundamental pillar in the management and control of fluorinated greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), within the European Union, its revision, known under the name F-Gaz III proposes stricter measures, accelerating the reduction of these substances, crucial because of their strong global warming potential.
What is F-Gas III?
F-Gas III is the evolution of European regulations aimed at limiting the use of fluorinated gases, introducing more ambitious objectives for the gradual reduction of HFCs until their total elimination in 2050, this legal framework aims not only to protect the environment but also to promote innovation and the adoption of greener technologies in the industry.
Main changes of F-Gas III in the market
The changes introduced by F-Gas III are significant, highlighting the sharp reduction in HFC quotas and the ban on the marketing of certain products containing these gases.
This process is structured as follows:
11% of the total volume of quotas will be allocated to new operators, in order to encourage the entry of new players into the market.
A complete ban will be implemented on the marketing of certain products and devices containing HFCs, including but not limited to household refrigerators, coolers, foams and aerosols.
New specific restrictions and/or limitations will be established for the commercial and industrial refrigeration sector, as well as for air conditioning, heat pumps and electrical switches.
Certification processes will be reviewed, with the aim of ensuring that they reflect the most current and sustainable practices.
Regular evaluation reports will be scheduled, with the first expected in 2027, the results of which could involve regulatory adjustments, either to strengthen or relax existing measures, depending on the findings.
Impact on the air conditioning and industrial refrigeration market
The impact of F-Gas III on the market is profound. Companies will have to adapt to a scenario where traditional refrigerants are gradually replaced by alternatives with less environmental impact (with a lower GWP index, or GWP in English). This affects not only production but also the maintenance and overhaul of existing equipment.
HFC Fee Reduction Details
F-Gas III establishes a detailed schedule for reducing HFC quotas, starting with a significant reduction upon entry into force and continuing with periodic adjustments until reaching total phase-out in 2050, this reduction program requires the industry to rethink its practices and products. .
Among the most notable measures is a complete ban on the marketing of specific products containing HFCs, such as certain types of refrigerators and air conditioners, marking a clear commitment to sustainable development.
